Stepping Stone Place is a LIHTC Funded 83 unit infill development on an existing site owned and operated by Native American Connections (NAC). The complex slides between the existing historical buildings and provides a backdrop for the quad. In response to the orientation of the building, the facade was adjusted to minimize direct solar heat gain, which in turn reduced operating costs. The existing 1920’s buildings were remodeled to provide additional community space for the residents and administrative space for NAC. The success on this project was defined by responsive program achieved through design charrettes which included all of the stakeholders. The project’s simple yet creative form/structural system created a building that was dynamic but easily constructed. This project won Arizona Forward’s 2015 Environmental Excellence Merit Award.
