Line Segment 1 [LS1] of the Light Rail Transit project included three platforms: 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, 19th Avenue and Camelback Road, and 7th Avenue and Camelback Road. A|R|T’s design addressed a number of priorities for the City of Phoenix including maximizing shade from April through October from noon until sunset, facilitating passenger gathering and movements to and from the platform, creating safe pedestrian haven islands, the use of pavement patterns to provide relief and interest to the long and narrow platform(s), using the vocabulary of the central screen to create entry and exit features that allow for platform individuality, using the center screen module to its greatest advantage while providing relief to its regularity, and creating neighborhood identity markers with fully integrated art and architecture.
